Madurai Airport Development

Madurai airport (IXM) was established in 1957, operated by Airports authority of India (AAI), under Ministry of Civil Aviation.

MID association is against naming the airport culture and strongly believes that bringing necessary Infrastructures & connectivity only help the development of the region, but NOT the names.

Terminal – New Integrated terminal building (NITB), handling both domestic & International passengers with an area of 17,560 sq.m handling 250 each on arrival & departure. Separate Domestic & International terminals, along with Cargo terminal in future plans as per Master Plan.

  • New Integrated Terminal Building on 12-September-2010.
  • Customs airport on 01-January-2012 and two chartered flights from Malaysia marked Madurai’s first international arrivals on 25 August 2012.
  • SpiceJet launched Madurai’s first international commercial flight to Colombo on 20 September 2012, followed by Mihin Lanka on 7 December 2012.
  • SpiceJet launched Madurai-Dubai flights in November 2013 and after the Union Ministry of Finance notified the airport to handle cargo on 28 May 2013.
  • Air India Express launched Madurai-Singapore flights on 11 September 2017, the cargo terminal opened on 28 November 2017, and SpiceJet shipped 300kg of Madurai malli (Jasmine flowers), to Dubai on 15 December 2017.
  • E-Visa on arrival was introduced at Madurai airport on 17 October 2018 and started 24/7 round-the-clock Operations on 1 October 2024.
  • Runway – 7500 ft with expansion works under process to 12500 ft.
  • Lounges – VIP lounge by AAI & CIP lounge by Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce & Industries.
  • Aero-bridges – 3 with apron that can accommodate parking of 7 aircrafts at a time.
  • Domestically connected with: Chennai | Bengaluru | Hyderabad | Mumbai | New Delhi
  • Internationally connected with: Colombo | Dubai | Singapore
  • Madurai airport caters to the need of totally NINE districts in Southern Tamil Nadu: Madurai | Ramanathapuram | Sivagangai | Theni | Dindigul | Virudhunagar | Tenkasi | Tirunelveli | Tuticorin
